TOP TIPS FOR FILMING, EDITING AND SCRIPTING A UGC VIDEO

UGC can be for anyone, if you have an iphone and some creativity you can achieve so much in the world of UGC. Below we are sharing some of our top tips for Filming, Editing and Scripting UGC content!

Filming

There are 3 things you need when filming your UGC video

  • an iphone / or camera (UGC tends to be used for social media, so an iphone is handy for the dimensions of the shot - filming via camera could add more time to editing which you don’t always need!)

  • A tripod - this tripod is crucial. These can range in price, but you really don’t need to spend tons of money on this! Being able to create your videos handsfree - is a game changer.

  • Creativity / Inspiration - Being able to conceptualise your own videos is a skill and if your mind is constantly wondering how you could film a certain product, or wondering how you can fit that product into your creative ideas, then celebrate that! Even if you have incredible ideas, it’s always great to have a story board, or a shot list, so you know each shot you need to make those incredible ideas come to life. That can come in many forms, whether it's a drawn storyboard, a tick list, or a few similar UGC videos you’ve seen that you can refer back to.

Whatever works for you.

Editing -

When it comes to editing, you might already have a style you enjoy, or whether you like to mix it up. It's great to know the different types of editing that go hand in hand with each type of UGC video.

  • Testimonials

    • Testimonials work great for ads, face to camera to start and then either a demonstration of a product in use, or showing the product to camera whilst still talking.

  • Routines

    • With our attention span being so little (yes as little as 3 seconds) the editing of a routine video will be the secret to grabbing someone's eye. With other types of UGC using a face to camera hook could be the way, but with a routine - chopping it up, so there is always something happening, adding cool transitions, making it as interactive as possible, will be the key in getting people to stay and watch.

Apps that are great for editing and also have free versions, are Inshot or Capcut. Capcut also has some great templates which again, make your life as a UGC creator, much easier!

Scripting -

Voiceovers! We all know what it’s like to start the voiceover & have to re-record it about 50 times before you are happy with how you sound & how you relay the information you need to (without stumbling on your words!)

  • Write down all the key points you want to include in your voiceover, this way you won’t miss any key information, and saves you having to listen back 100 times to see if you did make that one point or not.

  • Use the teleprompter feature on CapCut, here you can talk to the camera with your script rolling at the top (only you can see this it won’t record onto your video - but it's like live captions for you to follow!) Amazing time saving hack for testimonial or educational type videos.
